Remote Volunteer Management

Hi

I am working on a UK project mapping old trees throughout the UK.   Volunteers are a key part of my team, they work with me remotely from all over the UK.  I am just wondering if anyone else is managing volunteers remotely where they are helping to deliver a technical role for a project.  How do you ensure you have effective communication and continue to build their skills?

Many thanks

Kath

Hi Kath

We have several national volunteer projects at The Blue Cross which require us to manage volunteers remotely, but they're not technical projects.  We have nominated a number of our existing volunteers to be  "area co-ordinators" to keep in touch and organise rotas, meetings, training etc with other volunteers in their patch.  We're now starting to think about on-line training to keep these volunteers up to date.  e.g. some organisations are now posting training videos on You Tube for their volunteers to access.  I've got some links and websites I can signpost to you when I'm back in the office next week if you'd like to find out more?
