Identifying the business need

Morning all

I was asked the question recently "What is the Business need for volunteers within our organisation"  and I have had to stop and think about this!

We have two types of volunteers within our service; the special constabulary who are in essence fully warranted police officers who volunteer their time to undertake policing.  The business need for the special constabulary is clearly defined.

However more recently the police service has developed a police spport volunteer programme - which are non-uniformed volunteers who perform in essence back office functions that are not being undertaken by paid staff.  It is this programme that requires the business need to be idenitifed.

Does anyone have any views, pointers, comments on this please?

Hi Tina

You could consider using the balanced scorecard approach for indentifying the business need for engaging volunteers in the work of your organisation.

As part of the European Year of Volunteering 2011, we undertook this approach for involving disabled volunteers, and the results made quite a sound business case.

You can see this on the link below (NB you might need to use 'Google Chrome' as your Internet browser to view the mind-map).

Hope this helps progress your thoughts.
