Expanding the Role of Volunteering: Reacting to Recession and Promoting Opportunities

Thursday 11th June 2009
Forthcoming Westminster Briefing, hosted by the House Magazine, taking place in Westminster on Thursday 11th June.
Recession is likely to offer considerable opportunities to expand the role of volunteering, as rising unemployment leads to an increase in demand for volunteering positions, and companies see greater benefit in employer supported volunteering programmes. For full details including the event synopsis please visit the Westminster Briefing website.
This Westminster Briefing will give delegates the opportunity to discuss and be informed on the key challenges to expanding volunteering opportunities coping with increased demand. Participants will also consider the continuing effects of ‘Manifesto for Change' and how the issues it outlined are being addressed. Delegates will have the chance to engage with the panel in investigating key issues such as:
- With a greater pool of potential volunteers as a consequence of recession, how can volunteer involving organisations promote the personal and professional development opportunities they can offer?
- How can volunteer involving organisations strengthen their capabilities in engaging corporate employers looking to expand their volunteering programmes?
- How can employers from all sectors promote and entrench volunteering opportunities across their organisations?
- How to ensure that initiatives to promote volunteering amongst those with disabilities, prisoners and refugees maintain momentum and profile?
- How best to ensure that good quality training is provided for volunteers and those who manage volunteers, and that this is valued and accredited both within and outside the context of volunteering?
